Dr. Avi Shelemay

Dr. Avi Shelemay opened Capital Periodontics in Barrhaven in November of 2008. In addition to running his practice, Dr. Shelemay is currently a Clinical Instructor at the University of Toronto School of Dentistry.  At U of T, Dr. Shelemay works with the Periodontal graduate residents.  He teaches periodontal surgery including gum grafts, and the placement of dental implants.  He also co-runs LITE (Live Implant Training and Education) which offers hands on training to general dentists. Before moving to Ottawa, Dr. Shelemay was an Assistant Professor (part-time) with the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto and staff periodontist at Mount Sinai Hospital. He also maintained a private practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry in Toronto. Dr. Shelemay is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Periodontology. He obtained his DDS from the University of Toronto in 1996, and subsequently completed a one year internship at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Shelemay completed his Master of Science degree and specialty training in Periodontology at the University of Toronto in 2002. His research focused on osseointegration and how implant surface features regulate optimal healing and maintenance of soft and hard tissue levels around dental implants.

Dr. Shelemay and his wife Elisa have two daughters, Leetal and Michaela.  He enjoys spending time with his family and their adorable puppy.  Dr. Shelemay recently earned his pilot’s license and when the Ottawa weather cooperates he loves to fly!  Dr Shelemay is fluent in English, Hebrew and Italian.

Dr. Ben Sohmer

Dr. Ben Sohmer is an Anesthesiologist and Fellowship Coordinator in the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.   He also works as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Sohmer completed a BSc in Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University in Montreal in 1996. In 2000, he earned his MD from Dalhousie University in Halifax. In 2005, he went on to gain certification as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa.  He completed a Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ben is married to Ali and they have two young sons Jonah and Micah. Dr. Sohmer is fluent in English and French. We welcome you to read more about Dr. Sohmer on the Ottawa Heart Institute website.

Jessica (Jess) Dinell – Treatment Coordinator

Jess joined Capital Periodontics in March of 2018 as our Treatment Coordinator.  Jess came to Capital Periodontics with over twelve years of experience as a dental assistant.  When you come to the office for your first consultation, you will meet Jess and she will follow through with you and your treatment plan.  She is always there to answer any questions you may have. Jess has a calm, warm, personality and when you meet her, she will put you at ease right away.

When Jessica isn’t in the office, she is busy with her son and daughter who are both extremely active in sports!  Yes, Jessica is a hockey mom!

Shauna Hills – Patient Coordinator

Shauna joined Capital Periodontics as Patient Coordinator in March 2018.  Shauna has a strong administrative background and this is her first job in the dental industry. She is an incredibly fast learner and has learned the inside outs of dental insurance in no time! Shauna is responsible for booking new patient consultations and hygiene appointments.

Shauna is a newly wed!  When not at the office, Shauna is spending time with her new husband, her step kids, or baking treats for the office!

Cherie Turcotte – Dental Hygienist

Cherie joined Capital Periodontics in August 2017.    She has over two decades of experience as a dental hygienist and has excellent clinical skills.  Cherie is such a positive person and has been a great addition to our team.  It’s not just us who feel that way – Cherie achieved the Thunder Bay Dental Hygienists Association Award for a personality that is warm, friendly and flexible, the ideal traits of a Dental Hygeniest.

When Cherie is out of the office, she is busy with her four kids!

Summer Burch – Dental Assistant

Summer Burtch moved to Ottawa from Toronto in September 2017, and started at Capital Periodontics right away!   She is newly married, and her husband is working on his Master’s at University of Ottawa. Summer graduated from Durham College in Oshawa for Dental Assisting Levels 1 and 2 in 2014.  Before moving to Ottawa, Summer worked with an Endodontist in downtown Toronto.

In Summer’s spare time, she enjoys exploring Ottawa, reading, exercising and spending time with her husband and her two cats.

 

 

Christine LaRose – Dental Assistant

Christine LaRose was Dr. Shelemay’s first Dental Assistant at Capital Periodontics in 2008!  Ten years, and two kids later, Christine returned to our practice in April of 2018 and we are thrilled to have her! Her main role is as Dental Assistant, and she helps out in the front as well.  Christine has 10 years of dental experience in both general and surgical and is very comfortable answering any questions you may have.

Christine lives in Barrhaven with her husband and 2 boys Brody and Jordan. When Christine is not in the office she is spending time with her family. Christine loves all aspects of photography and always has her camera in her hand! (We have her to thank for most of the staff pictures.)

Elisa Bloom

Elisa Bloom has been working at Capital Periodontics behind the scenes since Day 1! (She is Dr. Shelemay’s wife!) She decided to officially join the Capital Periodontics team in March of 2011 on a part-time basis. Elisa has a MBA from McGill University and has over ten years of experience in Marketing Services. Elisa works on the website as well as organizes continuing education courses.  You will  often find her sitting in the front helping out with reception.

When not at work, Elisa enjoys spending time with her two young daughters, cooking, or working out.
