Dr. Avi Shelemay

Dr. Avi Shelemay opened Capital Periodontics in Barrhaven in November of 2008. In addition to running his practice, Dr. Shelemay is currently a Clinical Instructor at the University of Toronto School of Dentistry.  At U of T, Dr. Shelemay works with the Periodontal graduate residents.  He teaches periodontal surgery including gum grafts, and the placement of dental implants.  He also co-runs LITE (Live Implant Training and Education) which offers hands on training to general dentists. Before moving to Ottawa, Dr. Shelemay was an Assistant Professor (part-time) with the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto and staff periodontist at Mount Sinai Hospital. He also maintained a private practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry in Toronto. Dr. Shelemay is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Periodontology. He obtained his DDS from the University of Toronto in 1996, and subsequently completed a one year internship at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Shelemay completed his Master of Science degree and specialty training in Periodontology at the University of Toronto in 2002. His research focused on osseointegration and how implant surface features regulate optimal healing and maintenance of soft and hard tissue levels around dental implants.

Dr. Shelemay and his wife Elisa have two daughters, Leetal and Michaela.  He enjoys spending time with his family and their adorable puppy.  Dr. Shelemay recently earned his pilot’s license and when the Ottawa weather cooperates he loves to fly!  Dr Shelemay is fluent in English, Hebrew and Italian.

Dr. Vana Andreou

Dr. Vana Andreou received her BSc from Concordia University in 1993 followed by her DDS from McGill University in 1997. She completed her general practice residency at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, previous to working in private practice. In 2002, Dr. Andreou received a Masters of Science degree and training in Periodontology from the University of Toronto. Her research focused on effects of tobacco by-products and periodontal pathogens and their combined effects on bone turnover. She moved to Ottawa in 2002 where she has been in private practice since. Dr. Andreou is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, as well as an examiner for the college in the field of periodontics.

Dr. Andreou and her husband Mario have a young daughter, Elizabeth. Dr. Andreou is fluent in English, French, and Greek.

Dr. Mais Sweidan

Dr. Mais Sweidan received her DMD from McGill University in 2010.  Following her dental degree, she moved to Vancouver, BC.  In Vancouver, she completed a one year general residency at the Vancouver General Hospital and the British Columbia Cancer Centre. The residency was focused on surgical dental care and pain control.  She moved to Ottawa in 2011 to practice general dentistry.  In 2015, she completed a three year periodontal residency program at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  Her residency covered periodontal care, oral pathology and implantology.  In addition, she completed a Masters Degree in Public Health (MPH).  Dr. Sweidan is a member of the Ontario Dental Association, the Canadian Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology.  She is also a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

In her spare time, she enjoys biking, swimming, and practicing martial arts.  She also enjoys spending time with her two nieces and her Doberman.  Dr. Sweidan is fluent in English, French and Arabic.  She speaks conversational Spanish.

Dr. Ben Sohmer

Dr. Ben Sohmer is an Anesthesiologist and Fellowship Coordinator in the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.   He also works as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Sohmer completed a BSc in Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University in Montreal in 1996. In 2000, he earned his MD from Dalhousie University in Halifax. In 2005, he went on to gain certification as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa.  He completed a Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ben is married to Ali and they have two young sons Jonah and Micah. Dr. Sohmer is fluent in English and French. We welcome you to read more about Dr. Sohmer on the Ottawa Heart Institute website.

Dr. Sean Dickie

Dr. Sean Dickie is an Anesthesiologist and Fellowship Director in the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He also is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Dickie completed an Honours BSc in Biochemistry at Laurentian University in 1999. In 2003, he earned his MD magna cum laude from the University of Ottawa and followed with a residency in anesthesiology. He obtained his certification as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Anesthesiology in 2008. He then completed a Cardiac Anesthesiology Fellowship at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Sean and his wife Adѐle have 2 daughters, Julia and Isabelle. Dr. Dickie is fluent in English and French.  We welcome you to read more about Dr. Dixie on the Ottawa Heart Institute website.

Amy Boyce

Amy Boyce joined Capital Periodontics AGAIN in July 2015 as our Treatment Coordinator.  If you are a long time patient, you may recognize Amy as she was our receptionist for our first three years of practice.  Amy has worked for us off and on over the past few years and we are thrilled to have her back!  In addition to Amy being very knowledgeable about dentistry (she started her career as a dental assistant), she is also a warm and caring person.  If you have any questions about your treatment or your insurance, Amy is there to help.

When Amy isn’t in the office, she enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter and two step children.

Kelly Cranston

Kelly Cranston joined Capital Periodontics in August 2013.    Because of her fun personality, she is the life of the party!  She has been working as a hygienist since 1998 and came to us with eight years of experience working in periodontics.  She graduated from the dental hygiene program at Cambrian College in Sudbury in 1998.  Kelly loves working in periodontics because she enjoys building strong relationships with her patients.

In Kelly’s spare time she likes to run, go the gym and spend time with her two gorgeous nieces.

Erica Reed

Erica Reed joined Capital Periodontics in November of 2012.  She is a Certified Level II Dental Assistant, graduating with honours from Everest College in 2009. Since graduating, she has been worked in general dentistry, periodontics and oral surgery.  She enjoys learning about all aspects of dentistry and a dental office.  Erica is very enthusiastic and always willing to pitch in – we are lucky to have her!!!

Erica was raised in Kemptville, Ontario and in her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, roller blading and dirt biking.

Taylor Henderson

Taylor joined Capital Periodontics in September of 2016.  She graduated Dental Assisting with honours from Algonquin College in 2013. After graduating, Taylor worked 3 years in oral surgery as an implant coordinator and surgical assistant. She is truly passionate about the surgical aspect of dentistry and is dedicated to advancing her knowledge in this field.  We are really excited to have Taylor as part of our team!  Taylor lives in Merrickville, Ontario and in her spare time she enjoys being outdoors, travelling, working out, and spending time with her family.

 

Elisa Bloom

Elisa Bloom has been working at Capital Periodontics behind the scenes since Day 1! (She is Dr. Shelemay’s wife!) She decided to officially join the Capital Periodontics team in March of 2011 on a part-time basis. Elisa has a MBA from McGill University and has over ten years of experience in Marketing Services. Elisa works on the website as well as organizes continuing education courses.  You will  often find her sitting in the front helping out with reception.

When not at work, Elisa enjoys spending time with her two young daughters, cooking, or working out.

Tracy Fata

Tracy is the newest member of Capital Periodontics, joining us April 2017.  She graduated from the Dental Hygiene program at Algonquin College in 1992 and has enjoyed working in General Practice and teaching at CNIH in the dental hygiene program.  Always looking for new challenges and opportunities to grow in her profession, she is excited to join a specialized team in Periodontics.

Tracy lives in Greely with her husband, son and daughter.  In her spare time she enjoys the outdoors, gardening, and hiking with her two Boxer dogs.
